[624] **"Whoever":** whoever, of whatever sort … **"Bhikkhu":** … this is the **bhikkhu** intended in this context.
**"To a bhikkhu":** to another bhikkhu.
**"Bhikkhunī"** means: one fully ordained (upasampannā) in both Saṅghas.
**"Sikkhamānā"** means: one who has completed the training in the six rules for two years.
**"Sāmaṇera"** means: one who keeps the ten training rules (dasa-sikkhāpada).
**"Sāmaṇerī"** means: a female who keeps the ten training rules.
**"Himself" (sāmaṃ):** having assigned (vikappetvā) it himself.
**"Robe" (cīvara)** means: any one of the six kinds of robe-cloth, of the minimum size fit for assignment.
**"Assignment" (vikappana)** means: there are two kinds of assignment—assignment in the presence (sammukhā-vikappanā) and assignment in the absence (parammukhā-vikappanā).
**Assignment in the presence** means (saying): "I assign this robe to you," or "(I assign this robe) to so-and-so."
**Assignment in the absence** means (saying): "I give this robe to you for the purpose of assignment." He should be asked by that one: "Who is your friend or acquaintance?" (He should reply:) "So-and-so and so-and-so." He should then be told by that one: "I give it to them. What is theirs—use it, or give it away, or do with it as you see fit."
**"Without its being withdrawn" (apaccuddhāraka)** means: he uses it when it has not been given (back) by him, or without taking it on trust from him—an offence of pācittiya.
