[645] **Whoever:** means whoever, of whatever sort … . **Bhikkhu:** … this one is the bhikkhu intended in this context. **Of a bhikkhu:** of another bhikkhu. **Knows:** he knows by himself, or others inform him, or that one [the offender] himself informs him. **A grave offense** (duṭṭhullā āpatti): the four pārājikas and the thirteen saṅghādisesas. **Should conceal:** when he thinks, "Having come to know this, they will accuse him, they will remind him [of it], they will revile him, they will disparage him, they will put him to shame — I shall not inform," then at the very moment the burden [of responsibility] is laid down, there is an offense of pācittiya.
