[655] **"Whoever":** whoever, of whatever sort … **"Bhikkhu":** … this is the bhikkhu intended in this context as "bhikkhu."
**"Knows"** means: either he knows by himself, or others inform him, or that person himself informs him.
**"A caravan of thieves (theyyasattha)"** means: thieves, whether they have already committed their crime or have not yet committed it; whether they go to commit theft against the king, or they evade the customs duty.
**"Together with"** means: in one company.
**"Having made an arrangement"** means: he arranges, saying, "Let us go, friend," "Let us go, venerable sir"; "Let us go, venerable sir," "Let us go, friend"; "Let us go today, or tomorrow, or the day after" — an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa).
**"Even as far as the next village"** means: where villages lie a cock's flight apart, for each interval between villages there is an offense entailing confession (pācittiya). In a forest without villages, for every half-yojana there is an offense entailing confession (pācittiya).
