[813] Origin at Sāvatthī. Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus sat in inhabited areas making a loud sound, a great noise. … "I will sit making little sound in inhabited areas" — thus the training is to be undertaken.
One should sit in inhabited areas with little sound. Whatever bhikkhu, out of disrespect, sits in inhabited areas making a loud sound, a great noise, incurs an offense of wrong conduct (dukkaṭa).
There is no offense: for one acting unintentionally; for one acting from lapse of mindfulness; for one not knowing; for one who is ill; in emergencies; for one who is mad; for the first offender.
