[812] Origin at Sāvatthī (Sāvatthīnidānaṃ). Now on that occasion the group-of-six bhikkhus went amidst the houses making a loud sound, a great noise. … "I shall go amidst the houses with little sound" — thus the training (sikkhā) is to be undertaken.
One should go amidst the houses with little sound. Whoever, out of disrespect (anādariya), goes amidst the houses making a loud sound, a great noise, incurs an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offense (anāpatti): for one acting unintentionally; for one acting from lapse of mindfulness; for one who does not know; for one who is ill; in emergencies; for one who is mad; for the first offender (ādikammika).
