[825] Setting at Sāvatthī. Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus sat clasping their knees (pallatthikā) in inhabited areas. … "I will not sit clasping my knees in inhabited areas" — thus the training is to be observed.
One should not sit clasping the knees in an inhabited area. Whichever bhikkhu, out of disrespect, sits in an inhabited area clasping the knees with the hands or clasping the knees with a cloth, incurs an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offense (anāpatti): for one who acts unintentionally; for one acting without mindfulness; for one who does not know; for one who is ill; for one who has gone to his lodging; in emergencies; for one who is insane; for the first offender.
