[809] The origin at Sāvatthī (Sāvatthīnidānaṃ). Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus sat down amid the houses with their robes hitched up … "I will not sit down amid the houses with my robes hitched up" — thus the training is to be undertaken.
One should not sit down amid the houses with the robes hitched up. Whatever bhikkhu, out of disrespect, having hitched up his robe on one side or on both sides, sits down amid the houses, incurs an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offence: if it is unintentional; if he is unmindful; if he does not know; if he is ill; if he has gone into a lodging; in emergencies; if he is mad; if he is the first offender.
