[810] Origin at Sāvatthī. Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus went amid the houses laughing a loud laugh. … "I will not go amid the houses laughing loudly" — thus is the training to be undertaken.
One should not go amid the houses laughing loudly. Whichever bhikkhu, out of disrespect, goes amid the houses laughing a loud laugh, commits an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offence: if it is unintentional; if he is absent-minded; if he does not know; if he is ill; if, when there is a laughable matter, he merely smiles; in emergencies; if he is mad; if he is the first offender.
