[822] Origin at Sāvatthī (Sāvatthīnidānaṃ). Now on that occasion the group-of-six bhikkhus went amidst the houses with their heads covered up … "I shall not go amidst the houses with head covered" — thus the training is to be undertaken.
One should not go amidst the houses with head covered. Whoever, out of disrespect, goes amidst the houses having covered himself head and all, incurs an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offense: for one who acts unintentionally; for one who is absent-minded; for one who does not know; for one who is ill; in emergencies; for one who is mad; for the first offender (ādikammika).
