[839] Setting at Sāvatthī. Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus were making too large a mouthful … "I will not make too large a mouthful (kabaḷa)"—thus the training is to be observed.
An excessively large mouthful is not to be made. Whichever bhikkhu, out of disrespect (anādariya), makes a large mouthful, there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offense: for one who does so unintentionally; without mindfulness; not knowing; for one who is ill; in the case of hard foods (khajjaka); in the case of various fruits; in the case of delicacies taken with curries (uttaribhaṅga); in emergencies; for one who is mad; for the first offender (ādikammika).
