[853] Origin at Sāvatthī (Sāvatthīnidānaṃ). Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (chabbaggiyā bhikkhū) ate licking the bowl. … "I will not eat licking the bowl" — thus the training is to be undertaken.
One should not eat licking the bowl. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats licking the bowl commits an offence of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offence: if it is unintentional; if he is unmindful; if he does not know; if he is ill; if, when only a small remainder is left, he scrapes it together into one place, licks it up, and eats it; in emergencies; if he is insane; if he is the first offender (ādikammika).
