[171] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus." "Venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, a lay follower (upāsaka) possessed of five qualities is plunged into timidity (sārajja). Which five? He is one who destroys life; he is one who takes what is not given; he is one who engages in sexual misconduct; he is one who speaks falsehood; he is one who indulges in liquor, wine, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness. Possessed of these five qualities, bhikkhus, a lay follower is plunged into timidity.
Bhikkhus, a lay follower possessed of five qualities is self-assured (visārada). Which five? He abstains from the destruction of life; he abstains from taking what is not given; he abstains from sexual misconduct; he abstains from false speech; he abstains from liquor, wine, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness. Possessed of these five qualities, bhikkhus, a lay follower is self-assured."
