[264] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhunī … a sikkhamānā … a sāmaṇera … a sāmaṇerī … a male lay follower (upāsaka) … a female lay follower (upāsikā) possessing five qualities is deposited in hell (niraya) as if carried and put there. Which five? She destroys life, she takes what is not given, she engages in sexual misconduct, she speaks falsely, and she indulges in liquor, wine, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness. Possessing these five qualities, bhikkhus, a female lay follower is deposited in hell as if carried and put there.
Bhikkhus, a female lay follower possessing five qualities is deposited in heaven (sagga) as if carried and put there. Which five? She abstains from the destruction of life, she abstains from taking what is not given, she abstains from sexual misconduct, she abstains from false speech, and she abstains from liquor, wine, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness. Possessing these five qualities, bhikkhus, a female lay follower is deposited in heaven as if carried and put there.
