[145] Bhikkhus, one possessed of five things (dhamma) is deposited in hell (niraya) as surely as if carried and put there. What five? One destroys life (pāṇātipātī), one takes what is not given (adinnādāyī), one engages in sexual misconduct (kāmesu micchācārī), one speaks falsely (musāvādī), and one indulges in intoxicants — liquor and fermented drink — that are a basis for heedlessness (surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhāyī). One possessed of these five things, bhikkhus, is deposited in hell as surely as if carried and put there.
Bhikkhus, one possessed of five things is deposited in heaven (sagga) as surely as if carried and put there. What five? One abstains from the destruction of life, abstains from taking what is not given, abstains from sexual misconduct, abstains from false speech, and abstains from intoxicants — liquor and fermented drink — that are a basis for heedlessness. One possessed of these five things, bhikkhus, is deposited in heaven as surely as if carried and put there.
