[271] Bhikkhus, for the full understanding (pariññā) of lust (rāga) … for the utter destruction, for the abandonment, for the destruction, for the vanishing, for the fading away (virāga), for the cessation, for the giving up, for the relinquishment [of lust], five dhammas should be developed. … Of hatred (dosa) … of delusion (moha) … of anger (kodha) … of hostility (upanāha) … of denigration (makkha) … of domineering (paḷāsa) … of envy (issā) … of avarice (macchariya) … of deceit (māyā) … of hypocrisy (sātheyya) … of obstinacy (thambha) … of presumption (sārambha) … of conceit (māna) … of arrogance (atimāna) … of vanity (mada) … of heedlessness (pamāda) — for direct knowledge (abhiññā) … for full understanding, for the utter destruction, for the abandonment, for the destruction, for the vanishing, for the fading away, for the cessation, for the giving up, for the relinquishment [of it], these five dhammas should be developed.
