[338] Bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu with bad friends (pāpamitta), bad companions, bad intimates—associating with, keeping company with, and attending upon bad friends, and following their example (diṭṭhānugati)—will indeed fulfill the dhamma of proper conduct (abhisamācārika dhamma): there is no possibility of this. That without having fulfilled the dhamma of proper conduct he will fulfill the dhamma of a learner (sekhadhamma): there is no possibility of this. That without having fulfilled the dhamma of a learner he will fulfill the virtues (sīlāni): there is no possibility of this. That without having fulfilled the virtues he will abandon lust for sensual pleasures (kāmarāga), or lust for form (rūparāga), or lust for the formless (arūparāga): there is no possibility of this.
Bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu with good friends (kalyāṇamitta), good companions, good intimates—associating with, keeping company with, and attending upon good friends, and following their example—will indeed fulfill the dhamma of proper conduct: there is such a possibility. That having fulfilled the dhamma of proper conduct he will fulfill the dhamma of a learner: there is such a possibility. That having fulfilled the dhamma of a learner he will fulfill the virtues: there is such a possibility. That having fulfilled the virtues he will abandon lust for sensual pleasures, or lust for form, or lust for the formless: there is such a possibility.
