[584] Questioned by him, Mātali the deva-charioteer answered;
knowing the result of meritorious deeds, he declared it to one who knew not:
"In Bārāṇasī this one was a householder, a lord of giving (dānapati);
parks and wells, water-stalls (papā) and bridges —
these he respectfully furnished for the arahants grown cool.
Robes and almsfood, requisites, and lodging
he gave to those become upright, with a mind of serene confidence.
On the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight,
and during the special fortnight (pāṭihāriyapakkha),
he kept the uposatha observance, well endowed with its eight factors,
ever restrained in virtues;
self-restraint and sharing were his — he rejoices in a celestial mansion (vimāna)."
