[586] Questioned by him, Mātali the deva-charioteer answered;
knowing, he declared the result (vipāka) of meritorious deeds (puññakamma) to one who knew not:
"In Sāvatthī this one was a householder; he was a master of giving (dānapati).
Parks (ārāma) and wells, drinking-water stations (papā) and bridges —
these he respectfully made over to arahants (arahanta) grown cool.
Robes, almsfood, requisites, and lodging
he gave to those grown upright, with a clear and confident mind.
On the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight,
and during the special fortnight (pāṭihāriyapakkha),
he observed the uposatha well composed in its eight factors, ever restrained in the virtues.
Restraint and sharing were his: he rejoices in a celestial mansion (vimāna)."
