[221] **"The purified one (dhono) does not conceive on that account, that is, regarding what is seen, heard, or among things sensed."**
**Dhona:** wisdom is called *dhonā* (that which cleanses) — the wisdom which is understanding, knowing … non-delusion, investigation of dhammas, right view. For what reason is wisdom called *dhonā*? By that wisdom, misconduct by body is shaken off, washed away, washed clean, and washed out; misconduct by speech is shaken off, washed away, washed clean, and washed out; misconduct by mind is shaken off, washed away, washed clean, and washed out. Lust (rāga) is shaken off, washed away, washed clean, and washed out; hatred, delusion, anger, resentment, denigration, insolent rivalry, envy, avarice, deceit, hypocrisy, obstinacy, contentiousness, conceit, excessive conceit, intoxication, negligence, all defilements, all misconduct, all disturbances, all fevers, all torments, all unwholesome volitional formations are shaken off, washed away, washed clean, and washed out. For that reason wisdom is called *dhonā*.
Or alternatively: by right view, wrong view is shaken off, washed away, washed clean, and washed out. By right thought, wrong thought is shaken off, washed away, washed clean, and washed out. By right speech, wrong speech is shaken off. By right action, wrong action is shaken off. By right livelihood, wrong livelihood is shaken off. By right effort, wrong effort is shaken off. By right mindfulness, wrong mindfulness is shaken off. By right concentration (samādhi), wrong concentration is shaken off. By right knowledge (ñāṇa), wrong knowledge is shaken off. By right deliverance, wrong deliverance is shaken off, washed away, washed clean, and washed out.
Or alternatively: by the noble eightfold path, all defilements, all misconduct, all disturbances, all fevers, all torments, all unwholesome volitional formations are shaken off, washed away, washed clean, and washed out.
The Arahant is endowed with, fully endowed with, come to, fully come to, arrived at, fully arrived at, and possessed of these cleansing qualities; therefore the Arahant is *dhona* (purified). He has shaken off lust, shaken off evil, shaken off defilements, shaken off fever — therefore he is *dhona*.
**"The purified one does not conceive on that account, that is, regarding what is seen, heard, or among things sensed":** the purified one does not conceive the seen, does not conceive in the seen, does not conceive from the seen, does not conceive "the seen is mine." He does not conceive the heard, does not conceive in the heard, does not conceive from the heard, does not conceive "the heard is mine." He does not conceive the sensed, does not conceive in the sensed, does not conceive from the sensed, does not conceive "the sensed is mine." He does not conceive the cognized, does not conceive in the cognized, does not conceive from the cognized, does not conceive "the cognized is mine."
For this was said by the Blessed One: "'I am,' bhikkhus — this is a conceiving; 'I am not' — this is a conceiving; 'I shall be' — this is a conceiving; 'I shall not be' — this is a conceiving; 'I shall possess form' — this is a conceiving; 'I shall be formless' — this is a conceiving; 'I shall be percipient' — this is a conceiving; 'I shall be non-percipient' — this is a conceiving; 'I shall be neither-percipient-nor-non-percipient' — this is a conceiving. Conceiving, bhikkhus, is a disease; conceiving is a tumour; conceiving is a dart; conceiving is a calamity. Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train thus: 'We shall dwell with a mind that does not conceive.' Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train." Hence: "The purified one does not conceive on that account, that is, regarding what is seen, heard, or among things sensed."
