[345] **Some believe in purity through view (diṭṭhiyā eke paccenti suddhiṃ)**: Through view (diṭṭhi), some ascetics and brahmins believe in purity (suddhi), in higher purity, in complete purity; in release, in liberation, in complete release. Through the view "The world is eternal; this alone is true, anything else is vain," some ascetics and brahmins believe in purity, in higher purity, in complete purity, in release, in liberation, in complete release. Through the view "The world is not eternal … the Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death; this alone is true, anything else is vain," some ascetics and brahmins believe in purity, in higher purity, in complete purity, in release, in liberation, in complete release. Thus: some believe in purity through view. Therefore that brahmin said:
"If indeed, as you declare, (said Māgandiya,) purity comes neither by view, nor by learning, nor by knowledge (ñāṇa), nor even by virtue and vows; and yet neither by absence of view, absence of learning, absence of knowledge, absence of virtue, or absence of vows — then I consider your teaching to be simply a muddled doctrine, for some believe in purity through view."
