[172] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time, in the harvest season, bhikkhunīs (bhikkhunī), having asked for raw grain (āmakadhañña), were carrying it into the city.¹ At the city gate they were detained with the words, "Give us a share, noble ladies!" and were then let go. Then those bhikkhunīs, having gone to the nuns' quarters, informed the bhikkhunīs of this matter. Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about: "How can bhikkhunīs ask for raw grain?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as they say, that bhikkhunīs ask for raw grain?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can bhikkhunīs ask for raw grain? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Should any bhikkhunī, having asked for² raw grain or having had it asked for, having roasted it or having had it roasted, having pounded it or having had it pounded, having cooked it or having had it cooked, eat it, it is a pācittiya."
