[484] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhunīs (bhikkhunī), having asked for ghee, ate it. People criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can bhikkhunīs ask for ghee and eat it? To whom is what is well-prepared not agreeable? To whom is what is sweet not pleasing?"
The bhikkhunīs heard those people criticizing, complaining, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhunīs ask for ghee and eat it?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as they say, that bhikkhunīs, having asked for ghee, eat it?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "Bhikkhus, how can the group-of-six bhikkhunīs ask for ghee and eat it? This, bhikkhus, does not conduce to the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Should any bhikkhunī, having asked for ghee, eat it, it is to be acknowledged by that bhikkhunī thus: 'Lady, I have fallen into a blameworthy thing, unsuitable, which is to be acknowledged (pāṭidesanīya); I acknowledge it.'"
And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhunīs.
