[93] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the bhikkhunīs of the group of six were making a hoard of many bowls. People, wandering on a tour of the dwellings, saw this and complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can bhikkhunīs make a hoard of many bowls? Will the bhikkhunīs engage in trade in bowls, or will they set up an earthenware shop?"
The bhikkhunīs heard those people complaining, criticizing, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … they complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can the bhikkhunīs of the group of six make a hoard of bowls?" …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that the bhikkhunīs of the group of six are making a hoard of bowls?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "Bhikkhus, how can the bhikkhunīs of the group of six make a hoard of bowls? This, bhikkhus, is not conducive to the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Whatever bhikkhunī should make a hoard of bowls, this entails relinquishment with confession (nissaggiya pācittiya)."
