[469] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in the monastery of Anāthapiṇḍika. Now at that time bhikkhunīs had themselves rubbed and had themselves massaged by a probationer (sikkhamānā) … had themselves rubbed and had themselves massaged by a female novice (sāmaṇerī) … had themselves rubbed and had themselves massaged by a female householder (gihinī). People wandering on a tour of the dwellings, having seen this, complained, criticized, and spread it about: "How can bhikkhunīs have themselves rubbed and have themselves massaged by female householders, just like women householders who enjoy sensual pleasures?"
The bhikkhunīs heard those people complaining, criticizing, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … they complained, criticized, and spread it about: "How can bhikkhunīs have themselves rubbed and have themselves massaged by female householders?" …
"Is it true, as is said, bhikkhus, that bhikkhunīs have themselves rubbed and have themselves massaged by female householders?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can bhikkhunīs have themselves rubbed and have themselves massaged by female householders? This, bhikkhus, is not for the arousing of confidence in those without confidence …
"And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule:
"Whatever bhikkhunī should have herself rubbed or have herself massaged by a female householder, there is an offense of pācittiya."
