[220] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time several bhikkhunīs were bathing naked at the same ford of the river Aciravatī together with prostitutes. The prostitutes mocked those bhikkhunīs: "Ladies, what is the point of the holy life (brahmacariya) being practised by you while you are still young? Should not sensual pleasures be enjoyed? When you have grown old, then you can practise the holy life; in this way both benefits will be secured by you." Being mocked by the prostitutes, the bhikkhunīs were abashed. Then those bhikkhunīs, having gone to the nuns' quarters, told this matter to the bhikkhunīs. The bhikkhunīs told this matter to the **bhikkhus**. The bhikkhus told this matter to the Blessed One.
Then the Blessed One, on account of that incident, in that connection, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Well then, bhikkhus, I shall lay down a training rule (sikkhāpada) for the bhikkhunīs, in dependence on ten reasons: for the excellence of the Saṅgha … for the support of the Vinaya. And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule:
'Should any bhikkhunī bathe naked, there is an offense of pācittiya.'"
