[272] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time Bhaddā Kāpilānī had entered upon the rains at Sāketa. Having some business or other, she sent a messenger to the presence of the bhikkhunī Thullanandā: "If the lady Thullanandā would give me lodging (upassaya), I would go to Sāvatthī." The bhikkhunī Thullanandā spoke thus: "Let her come; I will give it." Then Bhaddā Kāpilānī went from Sāketa to Sāvatthī, and the bhikkhunī Thullanandā gave lodging to Bhaddā Kāpilānī.
Now at that time the bhikkhunī Thullanandā was learned, a fluent speaker, confident, competent to give a talk on the Dhamma. Bhaddā Kāpilānī too was learned, a fluent speaker, confident, competent to give a talk on the Dhamma, and highly esteemed. People, saying, "The lady Bhaddā Kāpilānī is learned, a fluent speaker, confident, competent to give a talk on the Dhamma, and highly esteemed," attended first upon Bhaddā Kāpilānī and only afterwards attended upon the bhikkhunī Thullanandā. The bhikkhunī Thullanandā, overcome by envy, [thinking:] "So these, it seems, are the ones of few wishes, contented, secluded, unentangled — these who live abounding in persuasion and abounding in solicitation!" — angry and displeased, evicted Bhaddā Kāpilānī from the lodging.
Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about: "How indeed can the lady Thullanandā, having given lodging to the lady Bhaddā Kāpilānī, angry and displeased, evict her?" … "Is it true, bhikkhus, as they say, that the bhikkhunī Thullanandā, having given lodging to Bhaddā Kāpilānī, angry and displeased, evicted her?" "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How indeed, bhikkhus, could the bhikkhunī Thullanandā, having given lodging to Bhaddā Kāpilānī, angry and displeased, evict her? This, bhikkhus, does not conduce to the confidence of those without confidence …" "And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Should any bhikkhunī, having given lodging to a bhikkhunī, angry and displeased, evict her or cause her to be evicted, there is an offense of pācittiya."
