[598] **"Gotama of wisdom vast as the earth (Gotamo bhūrimedhaso)":** the earth is called "bhūri." He is endowed with wisdom (paññā) that is equal to the earth, abundant and extensive. Wisdom is called "medhā": that wisdom which is understanding … non-delusion, investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya), right view. The Blessed One is endowed with, fully endowed with, come to, fully come to, possessed of, fully possessed of, furnished with this wisdom called medhā; therefore the Buddha is "of wisdom vast as the earth"; thus "Gotama of wisdom vast as the earth." Therefore the Elder Piṅgiya said:
Alone, a dispeller of darkness, he abides,
radiant, a maker of light;
Gotama of vast knowledge (ñāṇa),
Gotama of wisdom vast as the earth.
