[618] **"From Gotama of wisdom vast as the earth (Gotamā bhūrimedhasā)":** *bhūri* is a term for the earth. The Blessed One is endowed with this wisdom (paññā) — abundant, extensive, equal to the earth. *Medhā* is a term for wisdom: that wisdom which is the act of understanding … non-delusion, investigation of dhammas, right view. The Blessed One is possessed of, fully possessed of, has attained, has fully attained, has acquired, has fully acquired, is endowed with this wisdom called sagacity (medhā); therefore the Buddha is one of wisdom vast as the earth. Hence "from Gotama of wisdom vast as the earth." Therefore the Elder Piṅgiya said:
I do not dwell apart from him even for a moment, brahmin —
from Gotama of vast knowledge (bhūripaññāṇa),
from Gotama of wisdom vast as the earth.
