[608] *Gotamā bhūrimedhasā* — "from Gotama of wisdom vast as the earth": *bhūri* is a term for the earth (paṭhavī). The Blessed One is endowed with this wisdom (paññā), abundant and extensive, equal to the earth. *Medhā* is a term for wisdom — that wisdom which is understanding … non-delusion, investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya), right view (sammādiṭṭhi). The Blessed One has approached, thoroughly approached, come to, thoroughly come to, attained, thoroughly attained, and is endowed with this wisdom called *medhā*; therefore the Awakened One is "one of wisdom vast as the earth" (bhūrimedhasa). Thus: "from Gotama of wisdom vast as the earth." Therefore that brahmin Bāvarī said:
"Why, Piṅgiya, do you dwell apart from him even for a moment —
from Gotama of vast knowledge (bhūripaññāṇa),
from Gotama of wisdom vast as the earth?"
