[55] Whatever dhammas are directly known (abhiññātā), those dhammas are known. Knowledge (ñāṇa) is so called in the sense of that being known; wisdom (paññā) is so called in the sense of understanding. Hence it is said: the giving ear (sotāvadhāna) to [the teaching] "These dhammas are to be directly known," and the wisdom that understands that, is knowledge derived from what is heard (sutamaye ñāṇaṃ).
