[271] Which phenomena (dhammā) are wholesome? On the occasion when one develops the supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), conducive to dismantling (apacayagāmī) — for the attenuation (tanubhāva) of sensual lust (kāmarāga) and ill will, for the attainment of the second plane (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ) — on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is the perfect-knowledge faculty (aññindriya) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … These phenomena are wholesome. …
