[453] Which phenomena (dhammā) are indeterminate (abyākata)?
On the occasion when one develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), going to dismantling (apacayagāmī) — for the abandonment of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first plane (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is emptiness (suññata), with zeal as the dominant influence (chandādhipateyya) — on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … These phenomena are wholesome.
As the result (vipāka) of that same supramundane wholesome jhāna having been done, having been developed: quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is wishless (appaṇihita), with zeal as the dominant influence — on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are indeterminate.
