[589] Which is that form (rūpa) that is internal (ajjhattika), clung-to (upādinna)?
The eye sense base (cakkhāyatana) … the body sense base (kāyāyatana) — this is that form that is internal, clung-to.
Which is that form that is external (bāhira), clung-to?
The femininity faculty (itthindriya), the masculinity faculty (purisindriya), the life faculty (jīvitindriya); or whatever other form there is due to kamma having been performed (kammassa katattā): the form sense base (rūpāyatana), the odour sense base (gandhāyatana), the taste sense base (rasāyatana), the tangible sense base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana), the space element (ākāsadhātu), the water element (āpodhātu), the growth of form (rūpassa upacayo), the continuity of form (rūpassa santati), edible nutriment (kabaḷīkāro āhāro) — this is that form that is external, clung-to.
Which is that form that is external, not clung-to (anupādinna)?
The sound sense base (saddāyatana), bodily intimation (kāyaviññatti), verbal intimation (vacīviññatti), lightness of form (rūpassa lahutā), malleability of form (rūpassa mudutā), wieldiness of form (rūpassa kammaññatā), decay of form (rūpassa jaratā), impermanence of form (rūpassa aniccatā); or whatever other form there is not due to kamma having been performed: the form sense base, the sound sense base, the odour sense base, the taste sense base, the tangible sense base, the space element, the water element, the growth of form, the continuity of form, edible nutriment — this is that form that is external, not clung-to.
