[621] Which is that form that is internal, not the life faculty (jīvitindriya)? The eye base (cakkhāyatana) … the body base (kāyāyatana) — this is that form that is internal, not the life faculty. Which is that form that is external, the life faculty? That which, of those material phenomena (dhammā), is life-span (āyu), persistence (ṭhiti), continuance (yapanā), keeping going (yāpanā), movement (iriyanā), proceeding (vattanā), preservation (pālanā), life (jīvita), the life faculty — this is that form that is external, the life faculty. Which is that form that is external, not the life faculty? The form base (rūpāyatana) … edible food (kabaḷiṅkāro āhāro) — this is that form that is external, not the life faculty.
