[779] Which phenomena (dhammā) are grasped (upādinna)? The resultants (vipāka) of wholesome and unwholesome phenomena that are accompanied by taints (sāsava), belonging to the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), the form sphere (rūpāvacara), or the formless sphere (arūpāvacara) — namely, the aggregate of feeling (vedanākkhandha) … the aggregate of consciousness (viññāṇakkhandha) — and whatever form (rūpa) there is due to kamma having been done: these phenomena are grasped.
Which phenomena are ungrasped (anupādinna)? Wholesome and unwholesome phenomena accompanied by taints, belonging to the sense sphere, the form sphere, or the formless sphere — namely, the aggregate of feeling … the aggregate of consciousness; those phenomena that are functional (kiriyā), being neither wholesome nor unwholesome and not the resultants of kamma; whatever form there is that is not due to kamma having been done; and the paths (magga) not included [in any sphere] (apariyāpanna), the fruits of the paths, and the unconditioned element (asaṅkhatā dhātu): these phenomena are ungrasped.
