[797] Therein, what is doubt (vicikicchā)?
About the Teacher (satthā) one is uncertain, one doubts; about the Dhamma one is uncertain, one doubts; about the Saṅgha one is uncertain, one doubts; about the training (sikkhā) one is uncertain, one doubts; about the past (pubbanta) one is uncertain, one doubts; about the future (aparanta) one is uncertain, one doubts; about both the past and the future one is uncertain, one doubts; about phenomena (dhammā) dependently arisen through specific conditionality (idappaccayatā) one is uncertain, one doubts. That which is of such a kind — uncertainty (kaṅkhā), the act of being uncertain (kaṅkhāyanā), the state of being uncertain (kaṅkhāyitattaṃ), perplexity (vimati), doubt, being in two minds (dveḷhakaṃ), a forked path (dvedhāpatho), wavering (saṃsayo), indecisive grasp (anekaṃsagāho), hesitancy (āsappanā), vacillation (parisappanā), failure to fathom (apariyogāhanā), rigidity of mind (thambhitattaṃ cittassa), mental scarifying (manovilekho) — this is called doubt.
