[851] Therein, what is moral shame (hirī)? That which is being ashamed of that of which one ought to be ashamed, being ashamed of the attaining of evil, unwholesome phenomena (dhammā) — this is called moral shame.
Therein, what is moral dread (ottappa)? That which is being in dread of that of which one ought to be in dread, being in dread of the attaining of evil, unwholesome phenomena — this is called moral dread.
