[903] Which phenomena (dhammā) are both roots (hetu) and accompanied by roots (sahetuka)?
Wherein two or three roots arise together — these phenomena are both roots and accompanied by roots.
Which phenomena are accompanied by roots but not roots?
The wholesome in the four planes (bhūmi); the unwholesome; the resultant (vipāka) in the four planes, excluding the rootless (ahetuka) arisings of mind (cittuppāda) from the resultant of the sense sphere (kāmāvacara); the functional (kiriyā) indeterminate (abyākata) in the three planes, excluding the rootless arisings of mind from the functional of the sense sphere; excluding the roots arisen herein — these phenomena are accompanied by roots but not roots.
Rootless phenomena are not to be said to be either "both roots and accompanied by roots" or "accompanied by roots but not roots."
