[971] Which phenomena (dhammā) are to be abandoned by development (bhāvanā)?
The arising of mind (cittuppāda) accompanied by restlessness (uddhacca) — these phenomena are to be abandoned by development.
The four arisings of mind accompanied by greed (lobha) and dissociated from view (diṭṭhigata-vippayutta), and the two arisings of mind accompanied by grief (domanassa) — these phenomena are sometimes to be abandoned by development, sometimes not to be abandoned by development.
Which phenomena are not to be abandoned by development?
The four arisings of mind associated with view, the arising of mind accompanied by doubt (vicikicchā), the wholesome (kusala) in the four planes (bhūmi), the resultant (vipāka) in the four planes, the functional indeterminate (kiriyā-abyākata) in the three planes, and form (rūpa) and Nibbāna — these phenomena are not to be abandoned by development.
