[821] Which phenomena (dhammā) have roots to be abandoned by development (bhāvanāya pahātabbahetukā)?
The remaining greed (lobha), hatred (dosa), and delusion (moha) — these phenomena are roots to be abandoned by development (bhāvanāya pahātabbahetū). And the defilements (kilesā) standing together with them; the aggregate of feeling (vedanākkhandha) associated with them … the aggregate of consciousness (viññāṇakkhandha); the bodily action (kāyakamma), verbal action (vacīkamma), and mental action (manokamma) originated by them — these phenomena have roots to be abandoned by development.
Which phenomena do not have roots to be abandoned by development (nabhāvanāya pahātabbahetukā)?
Setting aside those phenomena, the remaining wholesome (kusala), unwholesome (akusala), and indeterminate (abyākata) phenomena — belonging to the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), the form sphere (rūpāvacara), the formless sphere (arūpāvacara), or unincluded (apariyāpanna) — the aggregate of feeling … the aggregate of consciousness; and all form (rūpa), and the unconditioned element (asaṅkhatā dhātu) — these phenomena do not have roots to be abandoned by development.
