[976] Which phenomena (dhammā) are accompanied by rapture (sappītika)?
Among the sense-sphere (kāmāvacara) wholesome (kusala), the four arisings of mind (cittuppāda) accompanied by joy (somanassa); among the unwholesome (akusala), four; among the resultants (vipāka) of the sense-sphere wholesome, five; among the functional (kiriyā), five; the two-and-three jhānas of the form sphere (rūpāvacara-dukatikajjhānā), as wholesome, as resultant, and as functional; the two-and-three jhānas of the supramundane (lokuttara), as wholesome and as resultant — setting aside the rapture (pīti) that has arisen herein: these phenomena are accompanied by rapture.
Which phenomena are without rapture (appītika)?
Among the sense-sphere wholesome, the four arisings of mind accompanied by equanimity (upekkhā); among the unwholesome, eight; among the resultants of the sense-sphere wholesome, eleven; among the resultants of the unwholesome, seven; among the functional, six; the two-and-two jhānas of the form sphere (rūpāvacara-dukadukajjhānā), as wholesome, as resultant, and as functional; the four formless states (āruppa), as wholesome, as resultant, and as functional; the two-and-two jhānas of the supramundane, as wholesome and as resultant; and rapture, form (rūpa), and Nibbāna — these phenomena are without rapture.
