[977] Which phenomena (dhammā) are accompanied by rapture (pīti)?
The four arisings of mind (cittuppāda) accompanied by joy (somanassa) from among the sense-sphere (kāmāvacara) wholesome (kusala); four from among the unwholesome (akusala); five from among the resultants (vipāka) of the sense-sphere wholesome; five from among the functional (kiriya); the two-and-three jhānas of the form sphere (rūpāvacara), as wholesome, as resultant, and as functional; the two-and-three jhānas of the supramundane (lokuttara), as wholesome and as resultant — setting aside the rapture that has arisen herein — these phenomena are accompanied by rapture.
Which phenomena are not accompanied by rapture?
The four arisings of mind accompanied by equanimity from among the sense-sphere wholesome; eight from among the unwholesome; eleven from among the resultants of the sense-sphere wholesome; seven from among the resultants of the unwholesome; six from among the functional; the two-and-two jhānas of the form sphere, as wholesome, as resultant, and as functional; the four formless attainments (āruppa), as wholesome, as resultant, and as functional; the two-and-two jhānas of the supramundane, as wholesome and as resultant; also rapture, and form (rūpa), and Nibbāna — these phenomena are not accompanied by rapture.
