[1023] Therein, which are the nine phenomena rooted in craving (taṇhāmūlakā dhammā)? Dependent on craving (taṇhā) there is seeking (pariyesanā); dependent on seeking there is gain (lābha); dependent on gain there is decision (vinicchaya); dependent on decision there is desire and lust (chandarāga); dependent on desire and lust there is attachment (ajjhosāna); dependent on attachment there is possession (pariggaha); dependent on possession there is avarice (macchariya); dependent on avarice there is safeguarding (ārakkha); and on account of safeguarding, the taking up of cudgels, the taking up of weapons, quarrels, contention, disputes, insolent talk of "you! you!", divisive speech, and false speech—many evil, unwholesome phenomena—come to be. These are the nine phenomena rooted in craving.
