[1034] And how is there [the notion] "I am" (asmī ti)? Without excluding any phenomenon (dhamma) whatsoever — form (rūpa), feeling (vedanā), perception (saññā), volitional formations (saṅkhārā), or consciousness (viññāṇa) — one obtains the desire (chanda) "I am," obtains the conceit (māna) "I am," obtains the view (diṭṭhi) "I am." When that is present, these proliferations (papañcitāni) come to be: "I am thus," or "I am just so," or "I am otherwise."
