[1044] And how is there [the thought] 'I may be'? Not having set apart any phenomenon (dhamma) — form (rūpa), feeling (vedanā), perception (saññā), volitional formations (saṅkhārā), or consciousness (viññāṇa) — one obtains the desire (chanda) 'I may be'; one obtains the conceit (māna) 'I may be'; one obtains the view (diṭṭhi) 'I may be'. When that is present, these proliferations (papañcita) come to be: 'I may be thus,' or 'I may be so,' or 'I may be otherwise.'
