[1057] And how is there [the thought] "By this I shall be"? Having singled out some phenomenon (dhamma) — form (rūpa), feeling (vedanā), perception (saññā), volitional formations (saṅkhārā), or consciousness (viññāṇa) — one obtains the desire (chanda) "By this I shall be"; one obtains the conceit (māna) "By this I shall be"; one obtains the view (diṭṭhi) "By this I shall be." When that is present, there come to be these proliferations (papañcita): "By this I shall be thus," or "By this I shall be so," or "By this I shall be otherwise."
