[1067] And how is there [the thought] 'By this may I be'? Having singled out (avakāriṃ karitvā) some phenomenon (dhamma) — form (rūpa), feeling (vedanā), perception (saññā), volitional formations (saṅkhārā), or consciousness (viññāṇa) — one obtains the desire (chanda) 'By this may I be'; one obtains the conceit (māna) 'By this may I be'; one obtains the view (diṭṭhi) 'By this may I be'. When that is present, there come to be these proliferations (papañcitāni): 'By this may I be thus', or 'By this may I be just so', or 'By this may I be otherwise'.
