[1048] And how is there [the thought] "May I too be"? Without setting aside any phenomenon (dhamma) whatsoever — form, feeling (vedanā), perception, volitional formations, consciousness — one obtains the desire (chanda) "May I too be"; one obtains the conceit (māna) "May I too be"; one obtains the view (diṭṭhi) "May I too be." When that is present, there come to be these proliferations (papañcita): "May I too be thus," or "May I too be so," or "May I too be otherwise."
