[1063] And how does 'By this may I be' come to be? Having singled out some phenomenon (dhamma) — form (rūpa), feeling (vedanā), perception (saññā), volitional formations (saṅkhārā), or consciousness (viññāṇa) — one obtains the desire (chanda) 'By this may I be'; one obtains the conceit (māna) 'By this may I be'; one obtains the view (diṭṭhi) 'By this may I be'. When that is present, these proliferations (papañcitāni) come to be: 'By this may I be thus,' or 'By this may I be just so,' or 'By this may I be otherwise.'
