[1053] And how is there "By this I am"? Having singled out some phenomenon (dhamma) — form (rūpa), feeling (vedanā), perception (saññā), volitional formations (saṅkhārā), or consciousness (viññāṇa) — one acquires desire (chanda) thus: "By this I am"; one acquires conceit (māna) thus: "By this I am"; one acquires view (diṭṭhi) thus: "By this I am." When that exists, these proliferations (papañcitāni) come to be: "By this I am thus," or "By this I am so," or "By this I am otherwise."
